Indian Railway to provide Contactless Smart Cards to 5 cities

New Delhi: Taking technology one more step towards citizen services, Indian Railways is coming up with automatic ticket vending machines (ATVMs) and contactless smart cards. This will make the fare collection automatic.
NXP Semiconductor’s chip technology, which has been selected by theIndian Railways will be implemented in 5 Indian cities.
The cities are New Delhi, Secunderabad, Kolkata, Bhubaneswar, and Pune. This whole process runs with secure microcontroller-based technology known as MIFARE DESFire.
Siepmann’s card systems, which manufactures card and inlay-manufacturer NXP has taken up the contract to provide MIFARE DESFire-based ICs.
About 6.5 lakh contactless cards would be provided within a year. NXP MIFARE technology is used world around and about 75% of automatic fare collection depends on this technology.
