Railways take over catering on Shatabdi, Rajdhani

LUDHIANA: Finally, the railway authorities have started implementing changes under the revised policy, getting hold of records of stalls at various railway stations. They have already taken over catering on trains, including Shatabdi and Rajdhani. Changes are under consideration for the rest of the trains.
Since Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) had not been providing helping hand to the divisional officers, they appointed a three-member committee comprising one assistant commercial manager (ACM)- level officer and two other officials for collecting details of contracts of stall owners by September 30.
After conducting thorough checks of the records, the authorities have decided to continue contracts of the stall owners. Following completion of the time period, they would take a decision on whether to change the pattern.
A railway employee said railway board had allotted the task to IRCTC in 2005 and 85% of the business of the corporation was based on catering in trains and food stalls at the stations. He further said IRCTC officials had been trying their best for divisional officers to get hold of the records in time for the catering work to start again. Now, the divisional officials have collected all records and they would soon implement the new food policy.
Sources revealed though the vending stalls are running under an agreement between the contractor and IRCTC, the authorities want to continue with the existing pattern as they do not have enough time and infrastructure to start everything from scratch. However, for keeping a check on food quality, they have constituted a committee that would conduct regular checks at stations as well as on trains.
Railway authorities had stripped IRCTC of the duty of handling catering at platforms as well as trains in July because the corporation's officials had not been conducting regular checks on the food and passengers thus had to eat inferior quality food. Therefore, it had become crucial for the railway authorities to keep checks on the food.
