Indian power locomotives arrive in Lanka

Colombo, Feb 11 (PTI) Sri Lanka Railway announced here today that first consignment of the Indian train power sets have arrived here as part of an effort by New Delhi to boost infrastructure in the country after the end of a three-decade ethnic war in May 2009.

Vijeya Samarasinghe, the director planning of railways said that two of the twenty power sets have six compartments each.
They consist of first class and economy class compartments.
Since the end to the ethnic war with LTTE, India has extended assistance to develop Sri Lanka''s southern and northern raiwlay lines.
India has underlined its efforts to help in the reconstruction activities of the country after the end of the civil war.
Government forces crushed the Tamil Tiger rebels in May 2009, ending the LTTE''s quarter-century armed struggle for a separate state. According to the UN, between 80,000 and 100,000 people were killed in the fighting.
