Indian Railways is world’s 8th biggest employer

New Delhi: Indian Railways had 1.4 million people on its payroll last year, making it the world’s eighth biggest employer, according to the Economist. The department which created maximum jobs in the world in 2010 is the Unites States of America’s Defence department, the international magazine said. The department gave jobs to 3.2 million people, which is equivalent to 1% of the country's population.
In their list of 10 biggest global employers, seven are government-run. Chinese People’s Liberation Army followed America's defence department by employing 2.3 million people.

Walmart, an American public multinational corporation, is at third spot with 2.1 million employees. McDonald’s, a quick service restaurant, had 1.7 million employees. China National Petroleum Corporation (1.7 million), State Grid Corporation of China (1.6 million), England’s National Health Service (1.4 million) are at 5th, 6th, 7th spot, respectively.
China Post Group (0.9 million) and Taiwan’s Hon Hai Precision Industry (0.8 million) complete the list prepared by the Economist.
